What is Polycythemia vera:

Polycythemia vera is a type of blood cancer which is happened to men and women also. It is a very rare type of cancer. In this type of blood, our body produces too much red blood cells which are the cause of polycythemia vera. Basically, red blood cells are throughout all the oxygen from our body. The excessiveness of red blood cells in our body makes our blood too much thick to make the blood flow very slow. In many cases of polycythemia vera can also cause some complication such as blood clots that can lead you towards heart stroke.

This is very dangerous for our health if we don’t treat it at the time then it may be the cause of death. When the flow of blood is not on its regular speed then the organs of our body can’t get oxygen in the required amount like brain and other body organs. When we don’t start its treatment then at one stage the red blood cells completely block the flow of blood in your body which is the cause of death in this disease and you may have to face stroke as well as leukemia which is another type of blood cancer.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the PV. It’s your daily routine and diet which can prevent you from some serious condition. During this disease it is compulsory you have to keep in touch with your doctor and have to go for a weekly checkup.

Cause of Polycythemia vera:

The main cause of Polycythemia vera is changing in the JAK2 gene. This gene is basically controlled or maintains the productivity of protein in our body which makes red blood cells. So if it will not work properly then definitely some changes create in our body when the level of protein is not in control then how can maintain the level of red blood cells. Mostly this disease happens at the age of sixty but there are no limitations to this problem.

Another cause of this disease can be passed down from the families. But it’s not compulsory more often many types of research prove that PV is happened with 95% people due to the change in genetic mutation.

Some factors which will increase the PV:

  • In the age of sixty or after sixty
  • In pregnancy
  • In a high blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol

Treatment for low-level PV:

When you are at first stage and you caught it then start its treatment because if you ignore it then you will face some serious facts.

Take a low dose of aspirin because it will affect your platelets and also decrease the risk of blood clots. Use a needle and remove some blood with the help of a needle. Try this treatment at least once in a week and then repeat it after months until your red blood cells going to be normal.

Treatment of high-level PV:

At the high level, you have to treat it separately than the low-level PV. Use Hydroxyurea drug used to maintaining the red blood cells. You can also use interferon alpha it will also help you to maintain the red blood cells and also fight against the overactive bone marrow cells which are the part of PV.
